ex-drinking buddy
My former drinking buddy back from my law school days is going to meet up with us in Berlin. We're planning to travel around a bit while Saltbox is in her conference.

We were chatting yesterday about plans, when he tells me that he hasn't had a drink since February. He read some book that convinced him that even drinking moderate amounts is too much, because it causes your body to crave more and puts you into a perpetual state of stress until that stress is relieved by drinking. He claims that he now feels as relaxed normally as he used to feel after a few beers.

Anyway, I found this relatively convincing. I started to think about how much time and money I spend on drinking, and how it forms such a central part of the social life here in Madison. Even a few beers keeps me from sleeping properly and makes me somewhat dehydrated. It certainly interferes with my running.

So I'm considering giving up drinking at least until Berlin, although I'll definitely want to sample the local beers when I'm travelling.

But our conversation also made me wonder what he now does with his time. He's a retired internet millionaire. His one real hobby was trying to destroy the reputation of this dentist that maimed him, and he's now successfully ruined that former "dentist to the stars". He's currently engaged in designing his Greenwich Village pleasure palace, but it doens't seem like that's a full-time endeavor, although maybe it is.

I remember eating dinner with that guy a couple of years ago.

Yes-that's the guy. I really wonder what he'll do with himself once he finishes his Jay Gatsby monument to social climbing excess. I mean, it'd be nice if he actually cared enough about the social welfare to do some pro bono work (he's a lawyer) or get involved with some other charitable organization, but I quite doubt it.

Okay, uh, let me be the first to say that this is a bad plan. At least if followed to the letter. Because I just finally found some decently priced Amarone that I am bringing back to the States and planning on drinking. Though on second thought, the less for you, the more for me!

Wait, do you mean go for it like I can drink it all? Or what? I already bought it today.

I mean that you can drink it all if you want. Don't let me interfere.

Nono, you should try it! It's not like you'll save any money by not drinking it!

I'd like to hear the actual reference on the drinking theory, if you can get it. It sounds plausible. Lately I've been having 1-2 beers/glasses of wine about once a week, and I feel pretty good--and often feel noticeably awful the morning after my "benders".

Pleasure palace design is definitely a full-time job. That's the whole point, after all (see Huysmans, À Rebours).

I've asked him about the book--I'll let you know when I hear back from him.

It's called "The Easy Way to Stop Drinking," by Alan Carr. I looked it up on Amazon, and it looks a bit like one of those self-promotional self-help books that's pretty short on substance or science. But he's bringing a copy for me to Berlin, so I'll at least read it over.

Ah, the millionare in the village - just confirming once again that he is the crazy; as my daddy says, 'never trust a man who doesn't have any vices.' And I've been saying for years that he should have donated the money to a charity or set up a charitable trust, or a shelter for kitties, etc. It is possible that I'm just jealous.
